30A is the scenic county road that runs about 24 miles along Florida’s Gulf coast between Destin and Panama City Beach, linking a string of small beach towns with sugar-white sand, emerald water and rare coastal dune lakes. It is quieter and more design-minded than its neighbors, with low-rise cottages, walkable town centers and very few high-rises.
Where to stay
Santa Rosa Beach, Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach on the west end have the most vacation rentals and condos, close to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park.
Grayton Beach, WaterColor and Seaside in the middle put you near Grayton Beach State Park, the Seaside town center and its shops and food stands.
Seacrest, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach on the east end are known for whitewashed architecture, boardwalk beach access and easy biking to restaurants.
Best times to visit
Best overall: May and late September through October: warm water, sunny days and fewer crowds than summer.
Best value: November through February has the lowest rates. Winter days are mild but usually too cool for swimming.
Busiest: June through early August, plus spring break in March and holiday weekends.
Weather to know: Expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking from mid-August through early October.
Getting there
Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) near Panama City Beach is closest to the east end, and Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is closest to the west end. Plan on 30 to 45 minutes from either, depending on where you stay.
Tips
Parking near the beach towns fills up fast in summer. The Timpoochee Trail runs alongside 30A for about 19 miles, so a bike is often the easiest way around.
Many rentals are a short walk or bike ride from the sand rather than right on the beach, so check the distance before you book.
