Destin sits on Florida’s Emerald Coast, known for its sugar-white sand, emerald-green Gulf water and a busy harbor full of charter fishing boats. It works for both families and groups, with hotels near the beach and plenty of condos with pools.
Where to stay
Near Henderson Beach State Park along US-98 you’ll find many of the newer hotels, close to the beach and to Destin Commons for shopping and dining.
Destin Harbor puts you near HarborWalk Village, fishing charters and boat rentals for Crab Island, the sandbar where boaters gather on summer days.
Holiday Isle, between the harbor and the Gulf, mixes Gulf-front condos with quieter stretches of beach.
Best times to visit
Best overall: May and late September through October: warm water, sunny days and fewer crowds than summer.
Best value: November through February has the lowest rates. Winter days are mild but usually too cool for swimming.
Busiest: June through early August, plus spring break in March and holiday weekends.
Weather to know: Expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking from mid-August through early October.
Getting there
Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is the closest airport, about 30 minutes away. Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) and Pensacola (PNS) are other options.
Tips for booking
Many Destin hotels include breakfast, and several are a short drive rather than a walk from the sand, so check the distance to the beach if that matters to you.
