Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach sit at Florida’s northeast corner, just below the Georgia line, with wide Atlantic beaches, maritime forests and a historic downtown full of Victorian-era buildings. It’s a quieter, more relaxed alternative to Florida’s busier beach towns.
Where to stay
Historic downtown Fernandina Beach, around Centre Street, has inns and hotels within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the harbor, a short drive from the beach.
Along the oceanfront, beach hotels and condos put you steps from the sand on Fletcher Avenue and nearby streets.
The south end of the island has larger resorts with golf, spas and long stretches of quiet beach.
Things to do
Walk the historic district, explore Fort Clinch State Park, ride horses on the beach or take a boat tour along the island’s rivers and marshes.
Best times to visit
Best overall: April through May and late September through October: comfortable temperatures and warm enough water for the beach.
Best value: November through February brings lower rates and quiet beaches, with cool weather that’s good for exploring downtown and the parks.
Busiest: Summer, plus the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival weekend in early May.
Weather to know: Summers are hot and humid with afternoon storms. The Atlantic is cooler than the Gulf in spring. Hurricane season runs June through November.
