About Helen

Helen is a Bavarian-style alpine village in the North Georgia mountains, about an hour and a half northeast of Atlanta. It’s known for one of the longest-running Oktoberfests in the country, tubing on the Chattahoochee River, and waterfalls in the state parks around town, and its cabins sit in the hills of the surrounding valleys.

Where to stay

  • In and near town lets you walk or take a short drive to the shops, restaurants and Oktoberfest.
  • Toward Unicoi State Park and Anna Ruby Falls has wooded cabins close to the trails and waterfalls.
  • The Sautee Nacoochee valley south of town is quieter, with farmland, mountain views and a short drive to Helen.

Best times to visit

  • Oktoberfest: Weekends from September into early November are the busiest of the year; book well ahead.
  • Fall colors: Late October and early November bring peak color to the mountains.
  • Summer: Tubing on the Chattahoochee and cool waterfall hikes.
  • Winter: Quiet weekdays and the lowest cabin rates of the year.

Getting there

Most visitors drive up from Atlanta on Highway 400 or I-985. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is the closest major airport.
