Key West is the southernmost city in the continental United States, a walkable island of colorful old homes, lively streets and famous sunsets at the end of the Florida Keys. Most visitors come for the atmosphere more than the beaches, though the island has a few good ones.
Where to stay
Old Town puts you within walking distance of Duval Street, Mallory Square’s sunset celebration, restaurants and historic sights. Expect smaller inns and guesthouses and higher rates.
Near the beaches on the south side, resorts sit closer to Smathers Beach and the Atlantic shoreline.
New Town, along North Roosevelt Boulevard, has more hotels with parking and pools, usually at lower prices, a short drive or bike ride from Old Town.
Best times to visit
Best overall: Late November through April: dry, sunny and warm, the classic time to visit.
Best value: Late spring and late summer through fall, when rates drop after the winter peak.
Busiest: Christmas through Easter, especially February and March, plus special events like Fantasy Fest in late October.
Weather to know: Summer and early fall are hot, humid and rainy. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking from mid-August through early October.
Getting there
Key West International Airport (EYW) is minutes from town. Many travelers fly into Miami and drive the Overseas Highway, about three and a half to four hours.
Tips for booking
Parking in Old Town is limited and can cost extra, so check whether your hotel includes it. Many visitors skip the car and get around by bike or on foot.
