About Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead is a mountain lake town in Southern California’s San Bernardino Mountains, about an hour and a half from Los Angeles at roughly 5,100 feet. Cabins sit in the pines around the lake and in the neighboring towns of Crestline and Running Springs, many with decks, fireplaces and room for a group, and it’s closer to the city than Big Bear.

Where to stay

  • Lake Arrowhead and the Village put you near the lakeside shops and restaurants and the Lake Arrowhead Queen boat tour.
  • Crestline, on the western edge, is the closest to the valley and sits around Lake Gregory, which is open to the public for swimming and paddling in summer.
  • Running Springs, to the east, is closest to Snow Valley for skiing and snow play, and is often better value.

Best times to visit

  • Winter: Snow weekends from December through February are the busiest; Snow Valley usually opens for skiing and tubing once there’s enough snow.
  • Holidays: The Village decorates for Christmas, and SkyPark at Santa’s Village in Skyforest is a family favorite.
  • Summer and fall: Cool mountain weather, hiking and Lake Gregory’s beach, with fall color in October.
  • Weather to know: Storms can bring chain controls on Highways 18, 138 and 330. Carry chains or drive a car with four-wheel drive, and check road conditions before you go.

Getting there

Most visitors drive up from Los Angeles, Orange County or the Inland Empire on Highway 18 (Rim of the World Highway), Highway 138 or Highway 330. Ontario International Airport (ONT) is the closest major airport.

Tips for booking

The lake itself is private, so swimming and boating on it are generally limited to residents; don’t count on lake access unless a listing says so. Many cabins sit on steep, narrow roads, so check parking and driveway notes for winter. Each card shows the drive to Lake Arrowhead Village, and it pays to compare the nightly rate and the total with fees before you book.
