Mexico Beach is a small, quiet town on Florida’s Forgotten Coast, with a few miles of uncrowded white-sand beach, calm Gulf water and no high-rises. It suits travelers who want a slower, old-Florida beach trip with fishing, sunsets and very little nightlife.
Where to stay
Along US-98 you’ll find most of the beach houses, small inns and condos, many within a short walk of the beach.
Near the canal on the east side of town is handy if you’re bringing a boat or planning to fish.
Nearby Port St. Joe and Cape San Blas have more rentals if Mexico Beach is booked up.
Best times to visit
Best overall: May and late September through October: warm water, sunny days and fewer visitors.
Best value: November through February has the lowest rates. Winter days are mild but usually too cool for swimming.
Busiest: June through early August and holiday weekends.
Weather to know: Expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking from mid-August through early October.
Getting there
Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) near Panama City Beach is about 45 minutes away. Mexico Beach is on Central time, while neighboring Port St. Joe is on Eastern time, so keep an eye on reservation times.
Things to do
Fish from the beach or charter a boat for Gulf fishing.
Go scalloping in nearby St. Joseph Bay in late summer. Season dates are set each year by the state.
Watch the sunset over the Gulf, a local ritual on the town’s west-facing beaches.
