Sanibel and Captiva are neighboring barrier islands off Florida’s southwest coast, known for some of the best shelling beaches in the country, protected wildlife areas and a slow, low-rise pace. There are no high-rise towers here, just beach resorts, inns and cottages.
Where to stay
Sanibel has most of the places to stay, from beachfront resorts along West Gulf Drive to small inns near Periwinkle Way, the island’s main road with shops and restaurants.
Captiva, reached by driving across Sanibel, is smaller and more secluded, with resorts known for sunsets and boating.
Things to do
Go shelling at low tide, bike the island’s paths, and visit the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge for birds and wildlife. Captiva is a classic spot for sunset.
Best times to visit
Best overall: March through May: warm, dry and sunny, with good shelling and active wildlife.
Best value: Summer and early fall bring the lowest rates and the quietest beaches.
Busiest: January through April, when winter visitors fill the islands and rates peak.
Weather to know: Summer is hot and humid with daily afternoon storms. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking from mid-August through early October.
Getting there
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers is about 40 minutes from Sanibel. A toll causeway connects the island to the mainland.
