Big Bear Lake is a mountain town in Southern California’s San Bernardino Mountains, about two hours from Los Angeles at roughly 6,750 feet. A seven-mile alpine lake sits below two ski areas, and most visitors stay in a cabin in the pines, many with fireplaces, hot tubs and room for the whole group.
Where to stay
- Big Bear Lake and the Village on the south shore put you near the walkable Village shops and restaurants and a short drive from the slopes.
- Moonridge, on the hill below Bear Mountain, is closest to skiing and the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.
- Big Bear City, at the east end of the valley, is flatter and quieter, often with larger cabins for the money.
- Fawnskin, on the north shore, is the quietest pick: forest, lake views and little traffic.
Best times to visit
- Ski season: Big Bear Mountain Resort (Bear Mountain and Snow Summit) usually runs from late fall into spring, and December through February weekends book up first.
- Summer: Boating, hiking and mountain biking around the lake, with cooler weather than the valleys below.
- Best value: Midweek stays and the quieter months between seasons bring the lowest cabin rates.
- Weather to know: Winter storms bring snow and chain controls on the mountain highways. Carry chains or drive a car with four-wheel drive, and check road conditions before you go.
Getting there
Most visitors drive up from Los Angeles, Orange County or the Inland Empire on Highways 18, 330 or 38. Ontario International Airport (ONT) is the closest major airport.

Tips for booking
Check each cabin’s guest limit and parking, since Big Bear Lake caps occupancy for vacation rentals and many cabins sit on steep, narrow streets. In winter, a cabin close to the Village or the ski area saves time on snowy roads. Compare the nightly rate and the total with fees before you book.
