Hocking Hills is a region of sandstone gorges, waterfalls and recess caves in southeast Ohio, about an hour southeast of Columbus. Most visitors stay in a cabin in the woods around Hocking Hills State Park, many with hot tubs and fire pits, and spend their days hiking to Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave and Cedar Falls.
Where to stay
- Near Old Man’s Cave (State Route 664) puts you closest to the park’s best-known trails, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave.
- Around Logan is handiest for groceries, restaurants and Lake Logan, about 15 minutes from the park.
- Laurelville and South Bloomingville on the west side are quieter, with secluded cabins near Ash Cave.
- Rockbridge to the north is closest to Columbus and Rock Bridge State Nature Preserve.
Best times to visit
- Fall colors: October is peak season; cabins book up early, especially weekends.
- Winter: Frozen waterfalls and the lowest cabin rates. The park’s Annual Winter Hike is held in January.
- Spring: Waterfalls run strongest and wildflowers line the gorges.
- Weather to know: Trails can be icy in winter and slick after rain, and some cabin driveways are steep gravel.
Getting there
Most visitors drive in from Columbus, Cincinnati or Cleveland. US-33 runs from Columbus to Logan, and John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) is the closest major airport.

Tips for booking
Each card shows the distance to Old Man’s Cave, the park’s main trailhead. A hot tub is the classic Hocking Hills cabin perk, and it pays to compare the nightly rate and the total with fees before you book.
